Rider Update: Kyler Thau

Kyler Thau from Chico, CA competed at his 3rd official race and 2nd WORCS race at Round 7 Straddleline ORV Park in Olympia, Washington on July 24 & 25 bringing home a 3rd place finish in both the Stock 90cc and 70cc races!  Just 1.3 seconds behind the fastest lap time in the 90cc class, Kyler came into the first turn strong but missed the holeshot by a fraction.  We are looking forward to more experience and practice to refine some of the racing fundamentals as we continue to prepare for the entire WORCS series in 2011.  Many thanks to our sponsors that have showed their support early on including Apex Racing, G-Force, DWT, EKS Brand Goggles and No Fear!

Rider Update Zach Jones:
GNCC 90cc Modified 8-11 Class, Round 9, Snowshoe Mtn West Virginia,
I was 3rd in the holeshot and was running right there with Hunter Hart and Cody Collier. Cody eventually got way ahead and it was just me and Hunter. I made a move and took over the 2nd place position and hung there the entire race. The quad ran great until the last lap coming to the bottom of the mountain. It started bogging when I pushed the throttle but it finally got going. By that time Hunter was right behind me and his Cobra outran mine up the hill. I just raced as fast as I could but couldn't catch him. I ended up 3rd in my class and 6th overall. My best overall finish yet!  Dad said he missed the clutch setup for the steep mountain slopes we were running and that caused my problems in the last lap.  I'm currently 2nd in points going into the summer break.

GNCC-Girls 8-15 Class  Round 8 John Penton, Millfield OH 06-05-2010
Kira Campbell: I got the holeshot in my class and my quad was running really good this race. I had the lead but Kamren and Cassie were on my butt. I came in for gas and had a few problems on the pit stop, my quad stalled and I had trouble getting it to kick. Kameron got around me while I was stopped and I had work to chase her back down. I tried to slow down into one turn and it was so slippery that I just slid so I hit a tree really hard. I didn't know that I was doing so well in the overall, I think someone said I was running in third most of the race. I have been doing really good this whole year but something has always happened to my quad on the last stinking lap, I am really thankful for my win last week and SO happy that my quad held up again this week for another WIN and 6th overall! I love the Snowshoe track so I cant wait til the next race!

Thank you first of all to all of our sponsors!  We went to Honey Lake for our first WORCS race.  Finished 9th, out of 16, in the 8-15 year old sport class and 8th in the 90 stock class (I think, the results aren't posted yet).  In a crazy weekend of wind and intermittent snow, we finished the first race and were on the last lap of the second with the kick starter fell off.  A 250 bumped Austin from behind, killing his quad, and without a kick starter he was stuck.  Dad realized the bolt holding the kick starter was broken 5 minutes before the second race and didn't have time to fix it.  Overall we were all happy with our finish considering it was his first WORCS race.

Rider Update Seth Reese:
Here is Seth getting ready to put on a show, he got invited to race in the Quad Wars at the Monster Jam show at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse on Saturday night. He scared the crap out of us and 20,000 fans, as he hit the finish line jump way, way too fast and he almost went over the bars.  Some how he saved it and rode on. The promoters told them to take one lap slow following the Pace Quad, then when it pulled off to get up to speed.  Well, when he saw the Pace Quad pull off, Seth's "pin it, to win it" mentality took over and it almost cost him big time. But he definitely gave the promoters something to talk about, and we heard it from some fellow racers who were in the stands the next day on Sunday, they had to break 'em on Seth a little bit. He said he never felt like he was in trouble at all when he came off the track.

On Sunday Seth rode smart and smooth to a 2-1 finish to take the overall. He said he was pacing himself on the 1st moto staying on the leaders tail , but never making any moves to pass him. He told us that 2nd was all he needed and that he was saving it for the 2nd moto. After a slight bobble on that gate for moto 2, he was 3rd to the stripe. As they came in to turn one Seth pulled down to the inside and blew by the 2 front runners to take the lead and then proceeded to check out from the rest of the field. Like I said he didn't look like he was going fast, but was extending his lead each lap. He showed us that he was ready for Steel City this weekend, so will give it a shot. He has 3 wins out of 4 races so I think he's ready.

Rider Update Seth Reese:

Seth Reese @ Twister Valley

Seth absolutely dominated his competition. He had 2 bad starts on the day coming out of the gate 3rd in moto 1 and 4th out of moto 2. His engine wasn't fully broke in yet as it only had about 15 minutes of run time on the new top end. But he had something to prove yesterday and boy did he do it. In moto one it only took him one lap to catch and pass the front runners, and he extended his lead to over a quarter of a lap. In moto 2 after eating a face full of roost from the 3 front runners, he was 3rd by turn 2 and half way thru lap one, he pulled down hard on the inside of a wide banked 180 degree corner and blew by the the 2 front runners to take the lead, and again he went on to check out from the field for the win. So a 1-1 for the day was awesome for us. There wasn't a jump on the track that even thought to lift for or a moment that he considered letting off the throttle once out front, he loves those new Elkas and the ATV- Four Play Softbars. I think he was a little mad at himself for the bad starts, because he was riding like a man (boy) possesed out there, he was on fire. What he was lacking on power out of the gate, he more than made up for in his will to win and his ability to do so. We are so very proud of him, good job Seth.

Tornado Warnings At Loretta Lynns

For Immediate Release

May 11, 2010

We had never been to Loretta Lynn's before and were super excited about this race. We arrived at the track late Thursday night and slept in line. Friday was a beautiful day, and we walked the track, signed up and our Dad put the final touches on our Apexes. Friday night the weather report was pretty bad with tornado warnings, high winds and rain predicted for our Sat. morning race. It rained all night but lucky for us the weather held off during the kids race. I (Alyssa Oplinger-11) am racing in the girls 8-15 class and was 6'th in points going into this race. My holeshot was not as good as usual and I was 6'th after the first turn. Track conditions were pretty slippery, and some kids were getting hung up on the hills. My Apex flew right up them and I was able to scan 4'th after lap 1 and held that position to finish the race! It was my best finish so far in the girls class, and put me into 5'th position in points.

My brother A.J. Oplinger-9 is racing 90 limited 8-10 and is currently leading the class in points. He finished second at Lorettas. We can't wait to go to Yadkinville next weekend!!

Thank-you!

Alyssa and A.J. Oplinger

Jolly Roger Motorsports Park – 5/2/10  NEATV Round 2

Jolly Roger was the site of the 2nd Round of the NEATV series and Drew Blackstone was much more prepared for it then Rnd 1 after having getting seat time on his Neil Dupont Built Chassis.  He spent the week in between races looking forward to unloading and getting onto one of his favorite tracks.  After just 6 laps on his race quad in practice to make sure it was dialed in he patiently waited for the 1st Moto’s of the 90 Auto and 90 Mod classes to be run on Sat. Afternoon and he  knew with NEATV’s new format he would have to wait until Sunday to run the 2nd motos.

He made a slight mistake in the first 90 Auto moto by inching forward at the gate and he had the gate drop on one tire but he held back and once it bounced up enough he drove right over it and took an outside line to move up to 4th going into the 1st turn.  He passed his way up to third, then 2nd and then shadowed Tyler Walch for over a lap until he saw his chance and took him to the inside and went on for a 1st place finish.  Drew made up for his moto 1 mistake by taking the holeshot on moto 2 Sunday morning and never looking back to put a sizeable lead on the rest of the pack.  He made it look easy but with Riders like Walch, Shayne Gendreau, Wade Pollard and James Moto this class can never be underestimated.  This was Drew’s 1st 90 Overall win at an NEATV event.

The 90 Mod class was slimmed down a bit this weekend as several riders made the trip to the National at Birch Creek but also had the addition of a Canadian Rider that is excellent.  With only a fifteen minute break after his 90 Auto Moto Drew was even for 2nd on the 1st moto holeshot.  Things settled down with Drew in 3rd behind Ethan Pearson.  Drew took advantage of an inside line to pass Pearson and held him off for 2 1/2 laps but he ran out of the energy needed to hold him off and finished 3rd.  The 2nd moto on Sunday had the same 3rd place result but his goal for the weekend was to try and run with riders like Pearson and he accomplished that.

On a weekend that included an emotional memorial lap for Carol Dupont who lost her long battle with Breast Cancer 6 weeks ago and for Mark Ruel who passed from injuries from an unfortunate accident in the pits at Rnd 1, Drew was very excited to Win his 1st ever 90 Auto Race and get a 3rd overall in the 90 Mod.  Round 3 will be May 15th/16th at MX207 right here in Maine.

Special Thanks to Drew’s many Sponsors and Supporters including – G-Force Powersports, PCS performance, DRT Racing, Coutt’s Bros. INC., Apex ATV, Crystyle Photography, Scott USA, RND Racing, Team Maine Racing, Hillside Performance, R. Blackstone & Assoc., Parks Performance,

Rider Update Seth Reese:
In Seth's first 2 races, he was cursed with some bad luck and had 2 motor failures in 2 weeks. On April 25th Seth was able to pull a 1-1 day at Moto-Masters in Mexico, NY on a sick motor claiming the 1st place spot, Dad patched the engine up enough to keep it running for 2 motos and son rewarded him with and excellent ride.
Confident we rolled into Seth's favorite track Unadilla MX in New Berlin, NY for a double points race. As Dad started up his quad on the stand right before practice, it sat there idling until a loud clanking sound was heard and it quit. Furiously Dad tore into the engine to find broken rings and piston, he was able to piece together a top end from bottom of the tool box parts, a cereal box and a tube of copper silicone. With only 95 lbs of compression, Dad was able to get Seth to the starting line minutes before the gate dropped where Seth again showed that it was worth the thrashing, finishing 2-3 on the day claiming a 2nd and salvaging some points. The 2nd moto proved to be an exciting bar to bar battle with Seth swapping position for the lead multiple times, he was only beaten on the long uphill parts of the track and the finish line was on top of the biggest hill where he lost 2 positions as he raced toward the checkers.

Then in the second race he got the hole shot only to flood it out with water. He was two laps down to the whole field and lapped all of them once and got 6 of them a second time. We're three rounds into the 2010 GNCC Racing Season and I'm finally getting a chance to send a Team Apex Racing rider update on Zach Jones.  First we would like to say our APEX Rocks!  It was a little hectic getting it ready and all dialed in before the season started in February but we made it and haven't had to touch it since.  Zach is running the 8-11 modified class and finished 4th in Florida, 3rd in Georgia and 2nd this past weekend in North Carolina .  Now that's what I call being on the right track!  He is currently 3rd in points and only 5 points out of first.  Zach has also pulled two out of three hole shots on his Apex.  What's more impressive about his results is that this year GNCC allowed manual shifter quads that were previously called super minis to run in the modified class (???????) and Zach has beat both Cobra's and Pister Pro's on his Apex.    On one of Zach's off weeks from GNCC we headed North and raced the MidEast Hare Scramble series where Zach pulled a 2nd place finish in the 11-13 Modified class.  Zach's latest thing is to practice his skill with a manual shifter on Dad's 450.  He's a quick learner on the clutch.  Sign us up for an 85cc shifter !!!!  Last and most importantly, Zach continues to be a straight A student ever since 1st grade!!

New Rider: Masen Bush
My name is Masen Bush and I'm from the small town of New Bremen N.Y.  I ride an Apex Pro MXRLT 50 and have come a long way as a racer both on the track and off.  I started out on an Arctic Cat 50 and was getting beat by some of the more "high performance" quads every weekend, so I know what it's like 'not to win them all'. I believe it has taught me sportsmanship and also made me a more driven rider. For the 2009 season, I ran my 'APEX' to 5 overall 1st place finishes, 2 - 2nds, 1 - 3rd, and 1 - 9th (my only DNF, not the fault of my APEX, but because my Dad has what I call 'TINKERITIS'.) I also won over half of my heat races.
My parents have always taught me ,"win, lose, or draw, you give high-5's and congratulate every rider after every moto. And have fun out there!" This is what I live by and I "DO" have fun racing.  I want to thank Apex for taking me on as a team rider and I hope to make them proud this season.
